Portland Electricity Costs Are Going Up β€” Here's Why

Portland electric rates have been climbing about 7.0% a year, mostly driven by storm damage and grid resiliency spending. Here's what the numbers actually show, why it's happening, and what Maine residents can do about it.

Central Maine Power customers in Maine currently pay around $0.220/kWh on average. At the historical escalation rate of about 7.0% a year, that rate compounds quickly if it holds:

That's a 287% increase over 20 years if the trend continues β€” meaning the same household usage that costs $220 today per 1,000 kWh would cost roughly $851 at that point.

What's actually driving the increase

Maine’s grid has taken a beating from an increasing number of severe winter and coastal storms, and both Central Maine Power and Versant Power have sought rate increases to pay for repairs and hardening. Maine’s Public Utilities Commission has approved multi-year rate hikes tied directly to that storm-recovery spending.

Maine’s summers are short and mild by national standards, but the state’s electric rates are still among the highest in the country β€” so even modest, short-season cooling loads carry an outsized cost.

How residents are fighting back

You can't vote down a rate case yourself, but you can reduce how much of your bill is exposed to it. Maine's LD 1730 now allows a permit-free, no-utility-approval plug-in solar system up to 1200W β€” already in effect. Most plug-in systems this size don't qualify for net metering, so the strategy that actually works is maximizing self-consumption β€” using the power as you generate it, rather than exporting it back to the grid at a rate that keeps rising anyway.
