The numbers behind the headlines
The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects ERCOT-area electricity demand will grow about 9.6% in 2026 — a dramatic jump for a grid that already runs close to the edge on peak summer days. The bigger story is what's coming: large-load interconnection requests to ERCOT — mostly data centers — are on pace to rise from roughly 5 gigawatts in 2026 to more than 109 gigawatts by 2032, according to grid-planning filings covered by regional outlets. That's enough new demand to roughly rival the entire current peak load of the Texas grid.
Some of that cost is already showing up on bills. The Public Utility Commission of Texas approved delivery-rate increases for Oncor and CenterPoint in the second quarter of 2026 — about $7 and $5 a month, respectively, for average residential customers — to fund grid infrastructure. Local coverage has also highlighted individual cases of monthly bills spiking toward $800 in areas near large new data-center buildouts.
Why this is different from a normal rate case
Texas' deregulated retail market means your bill is shaped by both your chosen retail electricity plan and the delivery charges set by your local utility (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, and others), which are passed through regardless of which retailer you use. Data centers don't pay for transmission and grid upgrades in isolation — those costs are typically spread across the broader ratepayer base, which is why residential delivery charges are rising even though the new demand is largely industrial, not residential.

Where Texas stands on plug-in solar
Texas has not passed a law legalizing permit-free plug-in (balcony) solar, so a grid-tied plug-in system isn't currently a clean option statewide. Advocacy for such a law is active, but nothing has moved through the Texas legislature yet. In the meantime, a battery-based solar generator that isn't grid-connected sidesteps the interconnection question entirely and works today, anywhere in the state.
Bottom line
The data-center buildout in Texas is only getting started, and the delivery-rate increases approved this year are unlikely to be the last. Track legislative activity for your state, and consider off-grid backup power that reduces your exposure regardless of how the rate cases shake out.
