Connecticut's Power Grid Is Running Thin This Summer — What the Alerts Mean

ISO New England, the operator that keeps power flowing across Connecticut and the rest of New England, has been warning of thin reserve margins through the July 2026 heat wave. Local utilities are asking customers to help.

What happened

ISO New England — the nonprofit grid operator responsible for keeping power flowing across Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont — issued a precautionary alert for the whole region on July 1, 2026, citing hot, humid weather and anticipated tight operating conditions heading into the evening peak. Regional coverage described New England's grid as having “little surplus” generating capacity during the stretch of extreme heat.

At the local level, Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) issued its own Power Alert to customers, warning of very high electricity demand and asking people to use power wisely — partly because a meaningful share of NPU's annual costs are tied directly to how high demand spikes on ISO New England's official “peak demand” days.

Part of a national pattern

Connecticut's alerts came during a heat wave that put roughly 160 million people in 30 states under extreme-heat warnings and prompted the U.S. Department of Energy to issue emergency orders supporting grid operators around the country, including the operator serving the mid-Atlantic (PJM). New England wasn't hit as hard as PJM's record-breaking demand, but the precautionary alert shows the same underlying pressure: heat waves are pushing regional grids closer to their limits more often.

Why Connecticut feels this more than most states

Connecticut already has some of the highest residential electricity rates in the continental U.S. — typically 30–40% above the national average — driven by transmission and distribution charges, public benefits surcharges, and the cost of importing power into a constrained regional grid. When demand spikes during a heat wave, that existing rate pressure and the grid's tight capacity compound each other: the same hours that stress the grid are also the hours you're paying the most for.

What you can do

When NPU or another Connecticut utility issues a Power Alert, shifting laundry, dishwashing, and EV charging outside the late-afternoon/evening peak makes a real difference — both to the grid and to your bill, if you're on a time-of-use rate. The other lever is generating some of your own power during exactly the hours the grid is under the most stress. Connecticut's HB 5340 (2026 omnibus solar act) now allows a permit-free plug-in solar system up to 1200W, and a south-facing panel produces the most electricity in the early-to-mid afternoon — right before the evening peak ISO-NE is watching most closely.
