What happened
On July 24 and 25, 2026, Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) asked its customers to voluntarily conserve electricity as a regional heat wave strained the grid. CSU's guidance was specific: turn the thermostat up rather than run the AC harder, open windows to cool the house naturally where possible, and avoid running washers, dryers, and dishwashers during the hottest part of the day.
The appeal wasn't limited to Colorado Springs. The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) — the grid operator covering large parts of the western and central U.S., including Colorado — issued an Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 for its West Balancing Authority Area effective July 24, 2026. High demand across Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming pushed electricity consumption up while reducing the grid's operating flexibility. SPP said the voluntary conservation response was enough to stabilize the system without resorting to mandatory rotating outages.
The bigger picture: a national grid emergency
Colorado's conservation appeal was part of a much larger story. How to reduce your exposure
